Creative Convention (Elroy, Moore, Middle School)
Students in grades 5 and 6 participated in a Creative Convention at David E.Williams Middle School in the Montour School District on March 5, 2009. Working in teams of four, students completed a series of activities that required creative thinking, writing, and acting. The theme for this year's event was Transformations. The students were judged on originality, elaboration, and flexibility.
Girls Going Places Conference (Middle School and High School)
A group of middle school and high school girls attended this entrepreneur leadership conference at Chatham University on March 10, 2009. They were separated and worked in groups at tables that each had two women mentors. These women owned their own businesses or were executives at area companies.
Sci-Tech Days (Middle School)
This event, held at Carnegie Science Center on March 11, 2009, was a great one-day enrichment opportunity for students who are truly interested in the fields of mathematics and science. The students participated in self-selected hands-on workshops and visited exhibits that were run by area companies and staffed by scientist and engineers that worked with and spoke with the students.
National Middle School Science Bowl (Middle School)
Five middle school students competed in the Jeopardy-style question part of the Bowl on March 12, 2009. The students had also designed and built a hydrogen fuel cell race car which they raced in the Regional Fuel Cell Races on February 26th. Our car had made it to the semi-finals, but then our fuel cell stopped working.
Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest (Middle and High School)
Students competed at this competition at the O'Reilly Theatre on March 16, 2009. They memorized a scene or monologue from Shakespeare and then performed it on the Theatre’s main stage. Prior to the competition, students were also able to attend an optional coaching session run by Carnegie Mellon University's Theatre Department.
PA Middle School Computer Fair (Middle School)
Students in grades 7 and 8 entered websites in the competition that was held on April 1, 2009. Eliza Schaap won third place for her website that she created for Baldwin High School's tennis teams!
